Gonorrhoea

What is it?

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that affects the genitals and sometimes the eyes.  Rarely it can affect the joints. It is passed on through unprotected anal and oral sex (both giving and receiving) and rimming.

How can I prevent it?

Using condoms and plenty of water based lubricant will greatly reduce the risk of getting gonorrhoea from anal and oral sex.

How do I know if I have gonorrhoea?

Many people don’t notice symptoms, especially with gonorrhoea of the throat or rectum, but 2 to 7 days after being infected you might notice pain when urinating and a discharge from your penis or rectum.

Is there treatment?

Yes – the infection is treated with antibiotics and repeat testing should show that you have cured your infection.
